Sovgåva Mobile
A daily reminder of the importance of fatherly love.
Sovgåva, Swedish for ‘sleeping gift’, is a data design in the form of a nursery mobile. This design visualises annual births in Australia by nuptial status of the acknowledged father. The data has been sourced from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and combines the data sets of annual births by nuptial paternity (married fathers) with annual births by ex-nuptial paternity (unmarried but acknowledged as fathers).

noun
Sov meaning sleeping, gåva meaning gift.
The mobile is a quintessential feature of nurseries and strongly associated with infancy and new mothers. Visualising this data in the form of a nursery mobile promotes inclusivity of the father within this relationship and bring awareness to the importance of paternal acknowledgment within early childhood.

Form made entirely by function.
The omission of colour avoids gendering the mobile or newborn; the circle motif consistently used is symbolic of a wedding ring, worn to signify one’s nuptiality.
