Book Cover Cutout

A book, a poster, a cover.

With gentle words and lovable characters Tim Winton tells the story of a boy and a fish, and of living as one with the natural environment. My team was tasked with designing a cover for his novel Blueback, capturing the symmetry of boy and ocean in the cycle of the current. We used layered paper as our medium to create a three dimensional effect, as if the fish were about to break the surface of the page and swim into the beyond.

I was the team's illustrator, creating the image to be translated into paper cut-outs. This was one of my first illustrator projects, and is still one of my favourite.

The gradient of blues and the orange features are actually colour swatches from a fishing boat, which is a subtle hint to the ever looming presence of the fishing industry within our beautiful oceans.
