The Portrait Project
A celebration of Queensland’s most senior citizens.
In a soft blue room twin sepia photographs sat by the window, next to a signed letter from Queen Elizabeth. For a while I would visit this room, and Dulcie and I venture out for morning tea and scones. We’d sit together and look at Kelvin Grove from decades ago, when Dulcie was a Girl Guide. I’d show her today’s pictures of these places, where I attended university, and we’d marvel at the difference.
Dulcie turned 100 in 2018.

- ARTIST STATMENT 2019
This was Dulcie’s first portrait. I chose oil as the medium because we’d find all these little landscape artworks in oil when we’d get lost in the corridors trying to find the piano. We both shared a love of art and music, and I was honoured to play the piano for her more than a few times. Whenever I struck the first chord to Amazing Grace, Dulcie would begin to sing.
I chose to paint in sepia to reflect those portraits by the window, a moment in time for a young bride and groom. I hope this portrait captures the soul I see in Dulcie – a strong, joyous mother. A quiet, mourning wife. An inspiring woman with a beautiful faith in God.
