Printing Patterns

Native Australian flora meets fabric.

My first series of Batik design, where Australian classics meet Indonesian tradition in a fresh and modern interpretation. The designs were sketched by hand after making studies of select local flora, then vectorised on Illustrator. These designs were produced Brisbane based fabric store East Coast Fabrics.

Printmaking for Batik fabric can be quite particular, with the textured look of the dye finish generating small details where the designer has specified negative space. Australian flora such as eucalyptus or grevillea blooms contain many miniscule stamens, and are iconic in their 'fuzzy' appearance.

The clean,  uniform-width and well-spaced linework clarifies the silhouette of each leaf and flower. The focus on using less variety and more repetition helps the eye to find the pattern within the colourful chaos of Batik fabric.
